A fitness discount to make you WANT to work out!

It can be a little intimidating to try out a new kind of exercise for the first time. Even a new instructor can make it difficult to decide if you like a class or not.

As a reminder, Wasatch Therapy in South Ogden is a great option if you're just starting your exercise regime, or if you're interested in adding more variety to your workout. No membership is required to participate, and your first class is always free.

That means if you'd like to attend a Pilates class with me, you can drop in for free to see if it works for you. That's a $10 value for absolutely no cost!

Take advantage of the opportunity and come on over to Wasatch Therapy on Monday afternoons for an hour of Pilates, no charge.

If you're looking for a new gym, then I have news on a deal for you. Wasatch Therapy in South Ogden is running a promotion (good through January 3, 2011) for new clients. No membership is required to attend the drop in classes, but a punch pass saves you serious money.

Now through January 3, you can buy your first punch pass for 25% off. That saves you $25 to attend 12 Pilates classes. If you're a current client of Wasatch Therapy, bring a friend to take advantage of similar discounts!

In January we'll also be hosting a New Year Health Fair, which will give you a chance to participate in the classes offered for FREE! There will also be information about nutrition, and if you're brave you can have your body mass index (BMI) tested to see how fit you really are.

Let me know if you have questions and I'm happy to get you more information!

Coming January 2011

I know it's crazy to be thinking about the new year already, but I don't want you to miss the great opportunities that will be available at Weber State University spring semester! I'll finally be teaching another class for WSU come January and I'm so excited, even though I don't know yet what I'll be teaching (it'll be some form of Yoga/Pilates).

Visit the Fitness website in order to see the schedule (available soon!) and decide which drop-in classes you'd like to attend. Student and Faculty of WSU can attend free, while the community can drop-in for only $6/class.

If you don't know what kind of class you'd like to attend, check the website in January for the date of Fit*Tastic. It's a one-time opportunity to experience a condensed workout from all the different instructors and the genres they teach. It'll give you a taste of every class, from Zumba to strength training to Yoga and Pilates. The best part of Fit*Tastic is it's free (although $1 donations are appreciated)!

So there you have it. I'm all geared up for a class that hasn't even been assigned to me yet. I hope you'll check back with WSU in January to see me on the instructor roster!

Private group sessions for Yoga, Pilates or PiYo.

I've been contacted for more information regarding group sessions, which is wonderful because teaching a certain number of classes per week is actually a goal of mine. I'm a nerd, I know.

Being a nerd doesn't prevent me from teaching a good class though!

There's currently times available Tuesday through Friday for group sessions, and availability ranges from mornings to early afternoon. Just let me know what day works best and I'll see what time slots are available at Farr West Tumblers to meet your needs.

Pricing is as follows:

1 person = $30
2 people = $25 each
3 people = $20 each
4 people = $15 each
5 people = $10 each
6 people or more = $7 each

If you check around you definitely won't find deals like this anywhere else, especially since free childcare can be provided if arrangements are made in advance. You better believe I take advantage of it when I teach my $5 Friday Flow class, so you should too!

Benefits of Yoga

One of the participants of $5 Friday Flow commented this week that she almost didn't come back for a second practice. She told me that she's not sure she's "good" at Yoga.

First of all, anyone can do Yoga. Second of all, if you're doing something dangerous, then I may correct you. But otherwise, you can easily be "good" at Yoga.

The reason this participant decided to come back is because after her first practice with me, her hip, shoulder and arm felt better for the following week.

YEA!!

Yoga can help stretch tired and tight muscles. It increases balance and can improve flexibility. Yoga helps practitioners become aware of the powerhouse, or core. Awareness of the powerhouse increases use of the it, which strengthens the abs. Yoga helps build lean muscles and it also encourages more efficient breathing. It's an overall workout that can be as challenging as you'd like since there are many correct options for most poses.

I'm so glad to hear that one practice made a difference for this participant. And I'm also glad that one practice turned into two. Hopefully two turns into three...

See you there!

What is PiYo?

PiYo (also known as Yogilates) is a great mix of Pilates and Yoga. I personally choose to incorporate many traditional Yoga asanas (postures) when teaching PiYo, but with an added challenge- movement. PiYo is often referred to as Yoga for hyper people.

Rather than holding an asana for multiple breaths, in PiYo participants are encouraged to flow through movements that alter the asana and challenge the muscles. It can be a nice alternative for practitioners who get "bored" in Yoga classes because they don't like to hold a posture for a long period of time.

PiYo has a lot to offer to all body types- there are balance challenges, opportunities to tone muscles and increase flexibility, and it also allows a practitioner to lose weight since there is an element of cardio work involved.

I use contemporary music in my PiYo practices to keep participants moving!

For information on rates, please visit the PiYo page of this blog.

What is Pilates?

Having been an avid Yogi for about three years before being introduced to mat Pilates, I wasn't sure I would like it. It took a while for me to get used to the breathing technique (which involves breathing in through the nose and out through the mouth) since in Yoga all breathing is done through the nose.

Regardless of the differences, I soon came to appreciate what Pilates could do for my body. It allows for a more aerobic workout than Yoga but offers similar challenges. In my practice, the benefits are parallel to those in Yoga: muscle endurance, muscle toning and increased flexibility.

Pilates can be performed by any body type- it is proven to benefit both young and old, and those with excellent or limited mobility. I was able to instruct classes into my 8th month of pregnancy, and within six weeks after my baby was born, I got right back into teaching! I firmly believe that practicing Pilates assisted my body in preparing for that great adventure, and it certainly helped me get back into shape afterward.

I use contemporary music when instructing my Pilates classes so as not to intimidate or bore participants. Pilates can be fun as well as challenging!

Please see information on rates on the Pilates page of this blog. For discount information, please contact me via email: livytay[at]gmail.com.

What is Yoga?

My philosophy on Yoga is simple; it is using traditional asanas (postures) to increase one's mind/body awareness.

As a practitioner since 2005, I love what Yoga has done for my body. Additionally, I love and utilize the breathing techniques taught when I need to refocus myself and relieve stress day-to-day. For me, it's not about a religion, although it certainly can be for many practitioners. I choose instead to focus on the physical benefits: muscle endurance, toning, and increasing flexibility. Also, Yoga has helped improve my posture and confidence. I am more aware of what my body can do.

Yoga can be for everyone because there are so many modifications available for the asanas used in a practice. There are resting postures that allow the practitioner to regain breath and balance if an asana is too challenging.

In my Yoga practices, I use contemporary music mixed with classical piano versions of Pink Floyd and Radiohead (for example). I want practitioners to feel at ease and excited about Yoga!

For information about rates and availability, please visit the Yoga page on this blog or contact me via email: livytay[at]gmail.com.

Namaste.
